118: Arrival at the Tower

By midday, they reached their destination.

Ahead of them, the road forked in two directions: one leading north and the other west.

Just east of the intersection stood a small hill.

Atop it was a small but well-fortified tower, where the army was stationed.

But before Kawao could focus on his mission, he had to bid farewell to his friend.

As they reached the fork, they looked into each other’s eyes.

“So, this is where we part ways,” Kawao began.

  “Yes…

At least for now,” Koru replied.

  A heavy silence followed.

Then Kawao clapped his hands together, shaking off the tension, and spoke clearly.

  “Good luck with your mission!

We’ll meet again when I’ve carried out my revenge!”

  Koru smiled at him.

  “Exactly.

  We’ll see each other again!

And when we do, I’ll stop you, no matter what it takes!”

  “You’re welcome to try!”

With a friendly handshake and one final, firm embrace, they said their goodbyes.

Then, they each went their separate ways.

Kawao slowly and cautiously made his way toward the tower overlooking the fork.

The hill was dotted with numerous bushes, both large and small—perfect for hiding.

Under the cover of the bushes, he crept closer and closer to the tower.

Where’s the guy I’m supposed to meet? he wondered.

He was close enough now to see the soldiers stationed there.

They didn’t seem to notice him and looked rather bored.

Should I wait a bit longer or—

  “You must be Kawao, right?”

  He turned around slowly.

Behind him crouched someone who looked like they had watched far too many war movies.

The man was completely covered in dirt and mud, dressed in camouflaged clothing.

  Was this his contact?

  “Yes… that’s me.

  …And you are?”

  “Your contact!

  The name’s Sordo!

  Nice to meet you!”
