Ch 16.4: Guardian

A loud rumbling sounded from what felt to be the heart of the district. Looking up from their seats by a local bar at the Southern Ribs section of Tresgate, Abe, Mari, and Cassy stood up from their seats and a light earthquake rocked the dome surrounding Neo-Kamakura. Gray dust began falling like soot from above, in what seemed like snowy ash, and Mari looked at Cassy.

“The hell is this?” Mari asked.

“Who cares, as long as it doesn’t fall in my drink,” Cassy replied.

Abe, watching with intent, noticed a slight shaking to the skeleton of the former World Eater Enthipid above him, and deep-rooted fears began to rise.

“Cassy, Mari, I think we need to get out of here now,” he said. “The integrity of the World Eater seems unstable. I’ve never seen it act like this before.”

The girls looked to him and nodded.

“Not without paying for my drinks, you’re not,” a voice called out sternly from behind them. The bartender, stubborn as he was, got a hefty tip that day, despite sensing the danger of the moment at hand.

New Celebrant didn’t offer an impression of grandeur and grace that Nyx expected. Leaving her victims behind in the room, Nyx had to improv hiding her tracks as the Hunter’s Curtain wasn’t quick enough to dissolve the bodies of the two men she killed earlier before authorities arrived.

Damn woman screaming. Didn’t give me much time to work with, Nyx thought, but ultimately things worked out. She planted a few explosives that marred the identifying features of the men’s faces, and she was fairly confident there wouldn’t be any forensics traced back to her as she was currently wearing gloves and a skin-tight body suit underneath her cloak and clothing.

Always dressed for movement and combat, part of her was glad such precautions paid off this time around.

She looked around, noticing a trail of missing persons posters littered throughout the walls of monastery buildings and other establishments. A district of minimal color variation, Nyx found it hard to navigate these streets without feeling some sense of confusion.

The man with the insect helmet said the canals were located west of the Harmonic Monastery, the 3rd largest in the district, Nyx recalled. Her eyes scanned for the golden archway which highlighted this particular monastery. Seeing one which fit the description a few blocks in the distance, she made her way over until her foot stumbled onto one of the entrances she was looking for.

Nyx climbed down to canal pathway below, which had dried up due to nonuse. Doing a quick inspection of her gear and letting out a big yawn as she walked, she began trekking towards the direction of the Harmonic Monastery, where she expected to finally nab the quarry she’s been looking for all along.
