Hey Diary,
I did my first real, official job all by myself today! Well, Maki was there, but he doesn't count.
So, well, I should start by saying we went to the Traveler’s Guild this morning! While Maeve was deciding if we wanted to be a full or partial party (I don't know what the difference is), I looked at the information board. Someone wanted help dealing with an infestation of rabbits.
I hadn't done rabbits before, but I've dealt with infestations of rats and ghost spiders, so I was sure I could handle them.
Anyways, Maki said he’d take me after we were done at the Guild, and he did!
The men who own the orchard, it’s a plum orchard, had no clue what to do. They kinda thought someone was going to come and try to kill all the rabbits. Which wouldn't have worked.
I asked the rabbits why they were in the orchard instead of the empty field next to it, and they said a family of foxes moved into their old warren. Which is a good reason to leave. So I went to the field, found the foxes, and asked them to move into the new, smaller warren in the orchard, and let the rabbits move back into their big, old one.
They didn't want to. And the rabbits didn't want to move into a warren that smells like fox now. Thankfully, I have a permit that lets me use charm magic on animals.
Stolen novel; please report.
It took like half an hour, but I charmed all the animals into being where I wanted them to be.
And for that I got paid four gold. I've never held that much money in my hand at once in my whole life. I almost asked if that wasn't too much, but Maki interrupted.
So yeah! I have money!
Or, I had money. I spent three of those gold buying all the equipment the Guild recommended I get.
OH YEAH! We were approved as a full party! We’re being lent a simple wagon with one horse (I haven't met the horse yet), since I can handle animals and Maki can make sure no one steals the wagon. Tomorrow we’ll be off to a town where they need an auditor. Maeve happens to be an auditor, so yay! We don't know what Luke will be doing, but if the town doesn't have a runesmith living there, he’ll be able to do a ton of work. So that’ll be good.
Oh, while I went with Maki to deal with the rabbits, Luke went and did work, too. So we’re all working and making money like adults!
Well, Maeve hasn't made money yet, but she's the one who negotiated with the guy at the Traveler’s Guild to get us registered and get us the job.
I asked why we needed to be registered, why we couldn't just go somewhere, and Maki said it’s a trust thing. Like, lots of people carry swords, but if someone robs a bank they call the official guard to come help. Lots of people travel, but to send something from one place to another and make sure it gets there, they want official travelers. And travelers do other things, like get people with specific classes to towns that need them for a little bit. And report on road conditions. And explore new areas, looking for specific things.
I hope we get sent to explore a new area someday. It would be the most amazing thing ever to go somewhere no one has ever been.
I'll have to dream about that tonight.
Signing off,
