By the time Ingram left the forest, the other members of the expedition had already returned to Yonder with slightly heavy expressions. Liz had vanished into the guild hall the moment they arrived to give a report to the Guild Master of their findings. Outside Tony and Isaac began walking towards a nearby restaurant, while Adams consciously walked in the opposite direction. “This isn’t supposed to happen this way, or am I miss remembering the events that lead up to the Burning Blades fury? It has been a long time since then, I can’t remember everything clearly, not until my Memory Reinforcement skill ranks up a few times. I just hope everything plays out the way I remember.” Adams sighed as he followed a familiar path to Pheasant’s Rest.
He stood outside of the Inn for a few seconds doing his best to mask his true intentions, “Leon’s Innate Intuition Skill is said to be correct eighty percent of the time, and the person who owned this skill saved countless lives. If I can get my hands on it before they can.” Adams muttered with a dazed and greedy expression before quickly concealing his expression, reverting to his usual benign smile. The moment he entered he saw the receptionist shoot him a glance before her eyes lit up. She enthusiastically spoke to him, “Hello, welcome to Pheasant’s Rest. Will you be staying with us today?” Adams nodded with a smile, “Indeed, do you have any rooms available?”
The receptionist’s eyes seemed to sparkle when she heard his voice but her lazy attitude reappeared when she slowly opened a draw and pulled out three keys before introducing them to Adams, “Yes we do, three in fact. We have a room close to the stairs, a room near the back of the second floor and a room roughly in the center of the second floor. Which would you like?” Adams didn’t even have to think about it before answering, “The room closest to the stairs.” The receptionist picked up a key labeled with the number two and swept the rest back into the draw. “Here you are, that would be five coppers for one night. If you wish to take a bath, do some laundry, or you wish to eat here, each additional option costs an additional copper.”
Adams nodded before silently opening his magic pouch and placing three silvers and five coppers on the table as he spoke, “I would like to rent the room for a week, no need for the additional options for now. I’ll come back to you when I need the additional services, Miss.” The receptionist almost impatiently blurted out feeling slightly annoyed, “Olivia.” She realized she answered a bit to harshly and her face flushed slightly as she took a deep breath and apologized, “Sorry, it’s been a long day. My name is Olivia Lion, the Owner of Pheasant’s Rest.” Adams didn’t call her out on such an obvious lie, it was roughly eight in the morning, they day had only just begun. “Thank you for your assistance, I hope your day gets better.” Adams said politely before taking his key and entering his room.
Once he was inside, Adams nearly cursed, “That woman is still as insufferable as I remember. I honestly don’t know what someone like Leon sees in a lazy woman like that. No, I have to get on her good side so I have a higher chance to get one of Leon’s personal quests. Just remember, Olivia Lion is a woman who like to finish things as quickly as possible, no idle chit chat required.” Adams calmed himself down and repeated what he remembered as he kicked off his shoes and collapsed onto the bed. “Though, I wonder why I never heard of this mysterious mage. Is this another butterfly? There are so many changes, that’s a good thing. To change a bad end, I need as many variables as possible, but I have to maintain a firm hold on them until I get what I need. I wouldn’t have anyone to cry to if I lost my original inheritance because I was too busy picking up everyone else’s opportunities.”
Adams closed his eyes and sighed, “It all starts with the true ruler of the Stellar Forest. Last time it took me almost a year to get my hands on it, this time I refuse to wait that long. Though there are benefits to repeating it all again, my initial stats were higher this time around. Although, using water magic after such a long time feels weird.” Adams did his best to meditate, but he just couldn’t get used to visualizing different forms of water after visualizing something much grander, this is the main reason he’s so desperate to regain what he lost. “In all honesty, just remembering the chants for water magic to create its magic circle is annoying. I mean, “Clear water flow and follow my soul to encase my foe” is such a mouthful and using chant-less magic still requires me to mentally say all of these words. It gets exhausting to correct myself every time I use magic.” Adams sighed and let his tense nerves relax before falling asleep.
After Ingram distanced himself from the star-lit forest, he remade his Absolute Block Barrier with 655 MP and after basically eight seconds the system prompt and the magic circle appeared,
{Judgment: Magic Circle is 99.83% accurate. Barrier strength is decreased by 0.17%.
Perfect Barrier Durability: 5,834.64 HP | Penalty applied, New Barrier
Durability: 5,824.72 HP
9 Proficiency Points gained.}
Ingram felt much safer after he was encased in two barriers, but the feeling of absolute safety was no longer there. In its place was a feeling of unease mixed with a bit of anger. ‘Why am I so unlucky? At this point I genuinely think I might have been cursed by those pages… who am I kidding I’m like a walking Murphy’s law, if a situation can go bad, for me at least, it usually does. The way I see it is my luck is just enough to keep me alive.’ Ingram mentally vented as he quickly walked away from the place that now makes his skin crawl. ‘I mean what does that person me, outsider? Is this a setting, can all NPC’s realized players don’t belong with a glance, or is this ability limited to creatures like bosses? I don’t know, what I do know is, that person is far too strong for the current me to face. They shattered three barriers with a literal thought, if they wanted to kill me, I’d be dead. This world is far more dangerous than I originally thought, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t be simple after seeing the Empyrean Emperor split the horizon vertically with a single slash.’
Ingram tried to reign in his fear and analyze what that voice actually said, but his shaking hands and the patch of sweat that formed on his back made him realize just how close he was to Death. ‘Outsider, he said he was an outsider too. The only outsiders I know of are the Celestial Clan that the Harp Empire fought an undetermined amount of time ago. The name the system gave me was the “Ancient Lieutenant of the Celestial Mage Corps” so what pushed me out was a Celestial? Why is it here, according to the Bloodstained Journal… actually, it never said the Celestial Clan left. Have they been living among humanity this entire time?” Ingram felt his skin crawl at the thought, that part of his brain that gets uncomfortable when he sees a mannequin began to stir, but quickly faded.
“Ignoring that, according to the journal, they can mimic humans, even down to the blood, so living with humanity shouldn’t be a problem. The only question I have now is, how long are their lifespans for the Ancient Lieutenant to still be alive to repel me from the forest? Do they have lifespans? I mean if they’re stardust, then maybe they’ll live as long as stars do.’ Ingram sharply inhaled at the thought before looking back at the stars that shone down on the anomalous forest. Ingram shook his head and decided to stop thinking about things that were far beyond his level. ‘I need to return to Yonder. Maybe I’ll feel a bit safer when I’m surrounded by other people.’ He picked up the pace like something was chasing him, all without a glimpse backwards at the starlit forest.
Ingram’s gaze lingered on the front gate before his tense shoulders relaxed, just a bit. However, that sense of unease grew exponentially as his mind drifted back to the fear he felt when three of his barriers were shattered with just a thought. ‘I’m still too weak. I lack any form of protection outside of my barriers. I don’t even have a wand or a magic staff to increase my magic attack even further. If then, it still wouldn’t be enough. Eighty-four thousand and eight hundred, is the number to beat.’ Ingram paled at the number when he compared it to his measly Life Level of Ten after three days of almost constant effort, albeit not the most effort he could put in towards leveling up.
‘That Ancient Lieutenant is level one-hundred and six, so if I can obtain a decent magic staff, or wand, along with a set of proper mage robes or whatever they have for mages in this world, to boost my magic stats even higher. On top of reaching Life Level 100, with all those bonuses, I should be able to survive their attack, even if that massive number wasn’t the strongest they can use.’ Ingram mentally planned, mostly to give himself something to work towards. Ingram didn’t have much confidence in being able to reach this goal in a timely manner, mainly because he’s unsure of if the required amount of exp for every level would increase.
‘No, I have to try. I’m tired of breaking promises to myself. I have an advantage, I can level up much faster than others, if their playing by the rules of other RPGs. I just have to endure the gentle notification sound, I wish I could mute it.’ As that thought appeared in his head, a familiar text box appeared in front of him, {You can mute the system’s notifications for the low, low price of… calculating your average number of notifications… Fifty Merit, after your personal fifty percent discount of course. Due to this statement holding extraordinary knowledge, you will be charged 25 Merit, also after your discount has been applied. From this point forward, just assume the discount has been taken into account. You have 126 Merit remaining. Do you wish to mute the system notifications?}
Ingram’s mouth twitched as the system once again forced him to pay for something he only thought of. ‘Does that mean the system can read my thoughts?’ The text box responded with a strange sentence, {Yes, but only your mind. Other “players” are not worthy of my personal attention. This statement was worth 10 Merit. You have 116 Merit remaining.} Ingram felt like a pair of eyes were watching him from somewhere he couldn’t see and shivered before it quickly faded away as a warm feeling washed over his body and he forgot what he was worried about. ‘I just wish it would just stop answering me without my consent. I can’t keep wasting Merit on questions, I haven’t been able to find another proper use for it yet.’ Just as Ingram thought it another system text box appeared, {As you wish. You will only get a response after truly desiring an answer by saying or thinking, “System respond to” and then stating your inquiry. This due to the condition you placed upon me, this statement costs 20 Merit. You have 96 Merit remaining.}
It took everything Ingram had not to swear when he realized he spent over 55 Merit on what amounts to nothing. ‘I… never mind what’s done is done. I’ll take this as a lesson, at least I won’t accidentally spend more Merit, that’s a positive.’ Ingram felt a wave of weakness wash over him when he remembered he still had to spend 50 Merit on muting the system’s notifications. ‘One-Hundred and Five Merit, in one sitting. Whatever, I don’t care. It’s just a currency of unknown origin or use that the system seems to desire, no big deal… I feel tired.’ Ingram tried to act nonchalant, but his hands were trembling, but not from fear. Instead he was full of dread, for obvious reasons, irrational anger, towards himself mostly, and a deep worry that he wasted a lot of something he may need in the future.
When all of his feelings mixed together in his chest, all he felt was an omnipresent pressure that seemed to weigh down his mind and body. ‘Should I endure the notification sounds, or should I spend more Merit to mute them?’ Ingram did his best to shake off his weariness to make a proper decision. ‘If I don’t then I wasted 55 Merit, well 35 Merit, that condition of requiring a certain phrase to ask a question was worth 20 Merit in my opinion. That’s still a loss of 35 Merit, I should cut my losses. It’s just the sound of a gentle bell ringing in my ears, it only got annoying after fifty consecutive notifications. I think I can learn to tune it out.’ Ingram made his decision and began to enter the gates only to freeze.
‘Wait a second, I just left on a quest to look for… what was it again, uh, I can’t remember. I have the quests in my pouch, but if I take them out I’ll feel like a failure for forgetting my cover story so fast.’ Ingram agonized over what he had forgotten until he remembered, ‘I remember now, I have to find five “One-leaf” Antidote Herbs, which are the systems equivalent of five Common Antidote Herbs. If my memory isn’t failing me, I found a couple last night… or was it this morning? It’s all blur after those debuffs hit me last night. All that matters is I am almost done with my quest. In times like these I require the assistance of my Innate Skill. I summon thee, Treasure Compass.’ Ingram stretched out his right hand and the crystalline compass appeared in his hand, but Ingram felt a bit awkward.
‘Did that mental blow last night shake a few screws loose? I’m so glad that no one… heard… that… The system can read my mind. The system can read my mind. The system can read my mind.’ Ingram mentally sighed three because important things need to be repeated three times. As Ingram struggled with the fact thoughts were no longer private and there’s nothing he can do about it. In an Iridescent space that shifted in some places with others vanishing completely with each passing moment, if Ingram were he he would see a familiar figure, himself standing in front of Yonder’s gates and everything within a Two-Hundred and Ninety Meter radius of himself. His thought echoed in this iridescent void of seemingly chaotic activity. Oddly, his form was the only thing not changing, shifting, or vanishing, as if something was consciously keeping this scene, but nobody and nothing was there watching.
Ingram summoned his compass and saw a different system prompt,
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
{What Tier of Treasure do you wish to Seek?
54 Trash (There are 1,951 within the Compass’ radius)
3 Common (There are 0 within the Compass’ radius)
1 Uncommon (There are 9 within the Compass’ radius)}
‘Oh yeah, I picked all Twenty-Seven herbs around Yonder yesterday. That isn’t good. I still need more Common Antidote Herbs.’ After thinking about if for a while Ingram came to a dangerous realization, ‘If I want more herbs I have to enter the forest again. Thankfully the forest spans in other directions, but I don’t know what lives in the surrounding forest.’ Ingram furrowed his brows before smoothing them out and changing the topic.
‘I should level up first, I should have reach all of the additional requirements, unless the Ancient Lieutenant destroyed my Physical Isolation Barrier.’ Ingram opened his mission panel and saw the Personal Life Advancement Quest was completely filled in,
{Personal Life Advancement Quest
Chose one task to accomplish to Reach [Life Level: 11] and Unlock a Sub-Class Slot.
If you wish you can choose more than one.
For every additional quest completed, you gain a better reward.
1. Block 100 Physical Damage (100/100)
2. Block 100 Magical Damage (100/100)
3. Block 100 Spiritual Damage (100/100)
4. Use a Physical Status Resist Barrier to Resist 10 Physical Status Afflictions (10/10)
5. Use a Physical Concealing Barrier for 10 Minutes (10m/10m)
6. Use the Physical Repelling Barrier to Repel 10 Entities (10/10)
7. Use the Physical Isolation Barrier for 10 Minutes (10m/10m)
8. Use the Physical Reversal Barrier to reverse 10 Entities (10/10)}
With a thought, Ingram felt something within him shatter as a slight feeling of emptiness took its place. ‘This feeling… so there’s a feeling for this breakthrough, unlike before. Is this feeling of emptiness due to opening a Sub-Class slot? Or is this a because of something else?’ Ingram’s thoughts fell still as he saw his reward for a perfect breakthrough,
{Life Advancement has been perfectly completed with all additional quests being completed.
Reward: [Life Level: 11] and one Sub-Class Slot has been unlocked.
Bonus Rewards: 8,000 Experience.}
‘So, I only get one-thousand exp for every mission completed. That’s a decent reward, it’s not stellar but its something. Maybe it will get higher as my levels, for both Life and Class, do. Thinking about how this system works is beyond my pay grade, so I’m not going to think about it anymore. I need to strength myself as much as possible. I have to funnel all my extra exp into my Life Level.’ Ingram suddenly sighed as he looked at the reward panel and felt like he had to make a choice before going forward.
“The real question I should be asking is, should I continue to follow the path of perfection, now that I know it is a dead end road, well if you can call ninety-nine percent a dead end road.” Ingram sighed as he looked up at the sky before lowering his head and walking back towards the forest, away from the anomalous forest of course. “I mean perfection is an impossible dream… maybe that’s the point. To forever chase something just out of reach… forever stuck at ninety-nine percent, longing for that final percent.” Ingram’s eyes lit up as if he grasped something, but he could quite grasp it, so he continued, not looking where he was going.
“Who say perfection is the end? Why is perfection, well, perfection? According to many sources, perfection can be boiled down to a lack of growth opportunities. If perfection is a complete cup, it can only hold so much. If I’m going by that mentality, then imperfection is a cracked cup that can hold an infinite amount of water due to being unable to completely reach its full potential.” Ingram’s thoughts were interrupted suddenly walking into a tree, the Physical Concealing Barrier bounced off, but the sudden jolt shook him out of his thoughts and the thought faded away like smoke in a hurricane.
Ingram felt like he just lost a huge opportunity, as for what that opportunity was he doesn’t know. “What was I saying? Oh yeah, whether or not to perfect every Life and Class Advancement quest. I mean, ninety-nine percent isn’t horrible, but it will take me much longer to advance. In novels a perfect foundation might not bring overwhelming power, it does allow for the protagonist to reach a level far beyond all that came before. So a ninety-nine percent perfect foundation shouldn’t be too bad, right? Even if I can’t hit the highest level, it shouldn’t be too much lower. Being the protagonist is too exhausting anyway, I’d rather be the protagonist’s teacher or something. Though that might be a death flag… why am I thinking about this. What am I doing with my life? I should level up first.” Ingram looked at his current status board before he leveled up,

As he did so, Ingram made an observation, “I think the wording for quests seem to slightly change each time I see them. It’s kind of funny, it humanizes the system in a way, as horrifying as that implication is. I mean, I know the system is sentient, it talks to me after all, so slight changes make sense. Although you’d think a digital being… is a system digital? Or would spiritual work better? I don’t know, whatever the system is would have a template for how quests would be worded. Then again, this change only started after I started talking to the system. Is it my fault the system changed?”
Ingram only thought about it in passing before he began funneling exp into his Life and Class levels. They rapidly rose until his Life Level was twenty and his Class Level was Thirty. However unlike before the two quests he got were different when compared to the three that came before.

Ingram felt kind of excited, but also kind of sad. He was excited because he could easily accomplish his Life Advancement, but he was disappointed because he would never know if the amount of Experience rewards from bonus missions increased with his level. ‘What does the system mean when it says, “Create an Addition Magic Circle Component”, what is that? Addition as in Add-on or… never mind, that was a dumb question. I doubt the system mean I should make my barrier capable of doing addition, that’s just silly.’ Ingram came to his conclusion, thankfully he had been working on what could be called an Add-on for his Barriers and he even got a few more ideas from his experiments. As for where it would be located on his Magic Circle, is a problem for future him. First, he had to create the component before worrying about where to place it.
‘It would only take twenty-one treasure compass uses to achieve my goal, or I could give up one of my Uncommon Treasures, like that Two-leafed Mana herb, or the Two-Leafed Paralysis herb. Honestly of the two, I’d want to give the Paralysis Hers, it’s worth far less than a Two-Leafed Mana Herb, but the real problem is, where would I offer them? Although, I feel twenty-one Common Treasures, or one Uncommon Treasure being converted into one Trash item, hurts my heart, but leveling up takes priority. Should I sacrifice that Uncommon to save time.’ Ingram’s mundane expression gave way, revealing his true feelings, fear. ‘I don’t want to die, I really don’t want to die.’ Ingram’s fear of death had only amplified after his chaotic experiences in [Realm of Realism]. In cultivation terms, his fear of death had already become his heart demon.
Ingram shook the distracting thoughts out of his head and focused on his new stats,

‘My Barrier strength has increased to 11,214.05. In order to survive a casual attack from the Ancient Lieutenant, I’d have to stack, about eight perfect Barriers. I have along way to go to be untouchable, theoretically. Everything has a weakness, if I enter an anti-magic zone, I’d die with seconds. I mean I’m Life level 20, but my Hp is only 650 and my physical defense is a big fat Zero.’ Ingram had almost four days to come to terms with his class’ weakness, so he wasn’t as emotional as before. However, the thought made him feel troubled, after all this is something he has to plan for.
‘Whatever… I feel like I’ve thought about that word a lot. Whatever…’ Ingram fell silent as he silently realized saying the word “whatever” had become a habit. ‘Putting aside my limited grammar, how do I give the system an Uncommon treasure?’ As soon as the thought appeared in his mind, a system prompt appeared, {Do you wish to sacrifice one random Uncommon treasure from your body.} Ingram looked up at the blue sky before silently agreeing.
From within his Magic Pouch, the Uncommon Mana herb vanished and in its place a small dull grey orb made of an unknown material appeared. Before Ingram could check to see what was taken from him, a system prompt appeared before his stunned eyes, but he ignored it and looked into his Magic Pouch with the energy of a gambler on a losing streak. When he saw the Uncommon Mana Herb was missing, he nearly shed tears out of frustration. ‘This is the reason I stopped playing games with lottery systems, I always lose the fifty-fifty. While I’m unsure of how much an Uncommon Mana Herb is worth, I know its at least above two silvers. What a waste, hmm what’s this… marble? Did it fall in with one of the herbs or did it come with the supplies I bought?’ Ingram pulled the mysterious orb out of the Magic Pouch with his left hand before smiling when he saw it’s name,
