The Goddess is an Intern

"Another dull evening eh? Zephyr." Sunseti smoked another cigarette, sitting next to me.

The news went on before us speaking of our country's economy benefiting from our warfare, a territory claim by the Sun Chariot Joan Freeman yet again, as her division is always at the epicenter of trouble. "Joshua must be enjoying being carried by her." I muttered.

"Mhm.. what's up? Are you still thinking about what happened to those people last year?" I give her a water bottle from the open cooler Emma made us. At the same time closing my diary.

"Yeah.... I'm aware we can't save everyone. My strategies and calls as captain may not be the best every time." She paused taking a sip. "If I could think hundreds of moves ahead in real-time, that doesn't stop unexpected variables. But..." She trembled in regret from sacrificing an entire village for our team's safety, though it wasn't her fault, she feels as though a certain someone's actions are maddening.

"You're unhappy about Rem not interfering? Don't worry, we all get it, we know Sun, no one blames you. Even if they do, me, maybe Darkness if she's not cosplaying as a anti social dark knight and, obviously Emma will always be on your side. Look, get some rest, we're deploying tomorrow on another class assignment. Don't worry Emma either." I hugged her.

"Alright... See you tomorrow Zeph. Thanks a lot lately, you truly are my best friend." She leaves quietly. I lay on my back sighing turning off the lotto number broadcast, "What a week. Time to train further, right Selene?"

Selenia consumed the energy we acquired earlier today, "Not only that, you also need to learn resonance even further! The energies you've accumulated will strengthen us, you're slow. I will consolidate this into my core."

"Oh right! Becoming a full fledged Star Warrior or whatever right? I'm ready."

"Good. You will level up a bit faster, there's caveats to it however. Just sync with me." She said lazily.

Power circulated within me as Selenia went into deep sleep – my body shifting statically adjusting, hurting through the transformation of this newfound level, "Almost like 10 years ago." Energy surged through me. "Red and Silver lightning? What do these mean," the twin energies mimic pulsar threading two small orbs; burning hot and scolding cold, the magnetic ring a hue of purple—totally related to thermal energy. "Mmm. Status."

  《Star Drive System (*^ー^)ノ?》

  Your Personal Assistant☆

  [Under Maintenance. (/▽\)? Sowwy Z.]

"She could have left information on this pulsar thing.. lazy. Why am I not surprised, I bet this maintenance will be fifty years going by her shifting mood, at least she isn't Song."

Anyhow. I once again wrote in my diary.

The silver glittery aura that surrounded me now represented my advancement to the soul of a genuine star warrior of the 2nd rank. I could feel the heightened reflexes and spirit energy flowing through my veins, empowering me like a wellspring, if that's an ok analogy here.

  [Updating..... Updating..... Building Starlight Soul]

Really?! You're starting the update now? Is she being realistic, am I being prank by her?

"Why do I bother. Just why do I expect her to do anything properly? Yeesh." I swat the screen away.

  Focus.

"Now it's time to check what's inside this halberd's heart using star resonance? Selene said something was unique about it." I carefully summoned the halberd. Channeled my sentience using soul search, a new skill of mine from an earlier ghost hunting experience on campus due to Rem being totally not afraid of ghosts... don't ask, maybe I can tell that hilarious story another day dear reader..

Inside is amazingly spacious, the moonlit domain dazzles me in a immersive trance, this is clearly something out of most science fiction novels, the different colored stars held a digital image of TV shows, old sitcoms, that one popular show about cows owning steak houses.

"Uhm.... don't tell me!" I glanced at a messy snack filled counter guarded by soda bottles.

"Who goes there!" A woman's divine presence boomed like lightning over me.

"I am Zephyr, nice to finally meet in person."

The woman regarded me with a amusement smug. "Ah, Zephyr, a child of the stars like she, my fragment said. It seems you have awakened the true power of a star core. I am Selenia Ars Kuon, the goddess of the storming moon, and this short sword is a relic of mine, bestowed upon mortals who display exceptional potential. My halberd being a magnetic contraption built using the uh.. finest notes! Yes. Did I forget my notes," She had streamers and a banner prepared while reading a piece of paper. "So welcome!"

  I sighed.

Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.

I was in awe of the goddess standing before me, honored to have caught her attention... not. "Explain yourself more properly Selene. What does this moonlit domain expansion entail?" I say as confetti fell.

The goddess smiled, her silver eyes gleaming with ancient wisdom. "The moonlit domain is a realm of pure moon energy, a manifestation of the power and mysteries of the moon itself. It is born from the union of your affinity with moon energy and the ancient knowledge contained within the sword of Selenia." She cleared her throat and put on glasses, she pulled out the lost notes rummaged from her piles of scattered clothing. "To harness this power, you must learn to connect with the essence of the moon, to attune yourself to its cycles and rhythms, only then can you tap into the moonlit domain and unlock its true combat potential. Wait what?" Selene explained while squinting at the paper. "Who wrote this lie." She whispered to herself. "They didn't teach me this in college."

I rolled my eyes, listening carefully, trying to comprehend the magnitude of what she was saying. "How can I begin this process, Oh mighty Goddess Selene? How can I attune myself to the moon and unlock the moonlit domain through the pulsar thing?"

"Pulsar?" She scratched her head now reading a bulky book. "Oh right! Star Soldier soul cores that power systems, Iforgot to supply- Ahem. I mean. Yes you can."

I almost wanted to go home watching her absolutely fail at her job.

"So my system is weak due to your lack of productivity as expected?" I shot as she averted her gaze elsewhere.

Selene extended her hand, a shimmering orb of moonlight forming in her palm. "N-Nevermind the past Zephyr. Take this moonstone, It is a sacred artifact that will aid you in attuning yourself to the moon's erm energy. Carry it with you, meditate under the uh moon's gentle rays, and immerse yourself in the serenity of its light. Through patience and dedication, the secrets of the moonlit domain will gradually unveil themselves to you." She read word for word. I held it closely feeling a strong magnitude of electricity stir inside my heart. A weight once there lifted off.

I look up at her flipping pages again.

"In simple terminology you're saying take in the natural energies around me in order to grow stronger, develop faster and efficiently if near associated energies? Am I warm or hot." I smirked at her sour face.

"This isn't in the script! Zephyr you aren't supposed to logically challenge me, be at awe, be naive so I can make more money! My first paycheck is banking on you being lost in transit... then when I get promoted, I'll upgrade the system and-"

  "Do your job."

  "But with better resources!"

"Do your job Selene, don't cut corners just because you're not creative." I smile.

"I am creative! You haven't seen me on my best days. Hmph."

I laughed at her. "When your favorite old criminal court shows have reruns? Or when nobody posts a video particularly interesting. Take your pick."

"You can't prove that- forget it. I'm not arguing about heavenly law and disorder as the best TV show ever made!" She points. "Sit."

I sit underneath the shimmering moonlight feeling sorrow, longing, redemption. Why? You may ask. Well, that's simple..

Throughout the ages many civilizations fell, most disregarded their fellows, betrayed lovers, spread plagues on smaller cities building up towards entire countries, even some were ignorant about the world suddenly ending during an era or two.

With my vision clear, I awakened from the long standing recollections with a thundering lance roaring with immense pressure.

"Congratulations partner.." The moon goddess smiled. "As expected of someone chosen by me!"

I grabbed the domineering lance feeling it's power course through me, "Goddess? Why did I live through multiple past life times just now, what's happening with the stars above our planet?"

Selene's smile faltered for a moment, a hint of intense sadness crossing her features. "Zephyr, you have been blessed with memories from your past lives because you carry the burden of the Star Sea within you like all children of Moonveil. It is a great responsibility that has been passed down through the ages."

Moonveil? Is she talking my orphanage?

"How so? Doesn't everyone technically have these or am I missing crucial information about the soul, if so, why now? We were separated years ago." My curiosity was limitless.

"The Star Sea is a celestial realm that connects all the worlds for one, and sometimes dimensions. It is a source of immense power for all from the Moonveil Orphanage, specifically eight of you are potent in that aspect, but also a potential for great destruction. Uhm... Don't think about it too much okay? That's not very important now. Until enough of you gather, I will explain more." She nods to herself. I doubt she understands any of it... No maybe she's more clueless than me? "Don't give that sorry expression Zephyr you jerk."

I nod along. "Wouldn't it mean people coveted this power in history. It would make sense for those countries who should have never won their wars obtain a large boon from activating treasures from the star sea.. I'd also assume this thing includes making you more comprehensive towards larger truths?"

"Yes. Throughout history, there have been those who sought to harness the power of the Star Sea for their own selfish desires. And there have been those, like you, who have been ignorant about its existence, and to ensure its balance and harmony, none would share less the entire world begins burning down." She explained politely. Then slowly checked her notes carefully. "Really? Why would you make me say that! Is this real? I'm an intern..... I mean.. ahem. Understand?"

I stared at Selene, a mixture of confusion and unease filling my heart. "Thank you, Goddess Selene. I will do my best to comprehend this new power!" I just wanted to go home at that point, she seems absolutely unreliable as usual, and she's interning? Dude. Who assigned a goddess in training some ridiculous lines? Does she look like someone capable of stopping a calamity from occurring..

Selene smiled softly, her silver eyes shining with pride. "I have faith in you, Zephyr. The path ahead will not be easy, but remember that you are not alone. The connections you have forged with your loved ones transcend time, for good and bad. Rem, and the ancient relics encountered, will guide you at first and strengthen you like any other star soldier. Anymore questions before I go? I'm sleepy.."

"If that ain't a rehearse line I don't wven know anymore."

I, dumbfounded didn't know what to do next.. "Have a nice sleep? But why us?"

Selene nodded, understanding the concern in my question. "Yes, the sudden appearance of sacred weapons in the hands of ordinary people is indeed alarming. It is a sign that the balance of power in the world is shifting, and that the forces seeking to harness the power of the Star Sea are growing stronger." She gave me what sounded like a tutorial pitch.

I rub my chin, "Like cults?"

"What? No! Hold on... Yeah. Sorta?" She scratched her head. "Let's say these sacred weapons, while rare and revered, can be obtained by those with exceptional potential and the ability to resonate with the energy of the relics. However, the recent surge in their appearance suggests that someone or something is manipulating the natural order, granting these weapons to unworthy individuals. .....I think? They're limited in quantity just letting that fact hang."

I facepalm. "Meaning someone is playing games and doesn't mind losing as long as people suffer?"

She laid on her bed. "It is crucial that you remain vigilant, Zephyr, and investigate this matter further. The misuse of these sacred weapons like myself can have grave consequences, both for the individuals wielding them and for your loved ones. Seek out the truth behind this anomaly, and ensure that the power of the relics is protected." Holding her teddy bear I froze seeing the remote in hand.

I nodded, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. "Thank you, Goddess Selene. I will do everything in my power to uncover the truth and protect my loved ones, you have.., you have a great night."

Selene smiled once again, her presence fading as she prepared to sleep. "I have faith in you, Zephyr. Remember, the power of the Star Sea resides not just within sacred weapons, but within the hearts and souls of those who are awakened by the moon. Trust in your own strength above all else.. also don't use me on weekends, I'm off on those days."

Opening my eyes I once again bring up the status screen

"4015? Is she being serious, these numbers never make sense." I flick the useless guide once again not even explaining half these upgrades. "Star Cultivation shouldn't be hard surely, right? The item shop is empty... the star map malfunctions, and the wardrobe option is just a pointless button! Selenia!" I almost wanted to cry, I swing the halberd through a practice dummy. "....On the bright side this thing is sharp. I'm going to bed."

I leave the area grumbling myself into a cross road vehicle for tomorrow's mission.
