CHAPTER - 121 [A Person And His Past]

  CHAPTER - 121

Valeria: (Shouting) What is he doing here?!

Is he back for revenge? Dav, kick him in the face!

Viktor Karpov: (Smiling) Sir, we’ve arrived as you requested!

  [He was Guy 1] [Chapter - 72]

Dav: (Lifting his lip) How’s the job going?

Viktor Karpov: (Kneeling) Thank you again, sir, for this opportunity.

I swear loyalty until time or death itself separates us, and I can no longer serve you personally.

  Dav: (Touching his shoulder) Stand.

Viktor Karpov: (Standing up) Thank you, sir.

Dav: (Looking at Vik) How’s your daughter doing?

Viktor Karpov: (Smiling) She’s growing up well, and now I can finally say she’s proud of me.

She told me I look really handsome in today’s outfit!

She’ll be turning eleven soon, and I’ll have to enroll her in an academy…

but not one that’s too expensive.

Dav: (Lightly tapping his shoulder) Then I suppose I’ll have another student to train next year.

I hope she’s as strong as her father.

Viktor Karpov: (Bowing) Thank you so much, sir.

I’ll feel safer knowing she’ll be under your protection.

Dav: (Walking) We need to go now, or the women will get angry.

Viktor Karpov: (Shouting) Get the men and the professors on board! Drive carefully!

  Guards: (Shouting) Yes, sir!

  Two months ago

  [Dav on a balcony]

Dav: (Thinking) My family is so relaxed they don’t even bother to protect themselves better, despite being rich...

I’ll have to handle this personally.

[He pulled a card with a number from his pocket]

Dav: (Funny face, lifting his lip) I wonder if he’s changed his mind.

  [Phone ringing]

Viktor Karpov: (Shouting) Who dares call me at this hour?!

Dav: (Annoyed, funny face) Maybe I should’ve killed you that day at the mall…

  what do you think?

Viktor Karpov: (Face going pale) Sir! I didn’t know it was you!

  I’m sorry...

[Dav closing his eyes, touching his forehead, looking out the balcony]

Dav: (Calm voice) Tell me where we can meet.

I need to talk to you about some things.

  Viktor Karpov: (Composed) Yes, sir.

I’ll send you the coordinates for a nearby bar so you won’t have to go far.

Should I head there now or tomorrow?

  Dav: (Lip raised) Now.

  40 minutes later

Dav: (Thinking) I arrived quickly because I can fly fast...

  Not surprised he’s taking longer.

  [Viktor Karpov enters the bar]

  Dav: (Thinking) Oh, finally here.

(Shouting) Big guy, I’m here! Come over!

Viktor Karpov: (Surprised) Sir! Your humble servant is here.

Dav: (Hand on face) Stop with that.

  You’re embarrassing me in public.

(Sighing) Anyway, tell me about yourself.

Tell me your story, in every detail.

Viktor Karpov: (Sitting at the bar) Alright, sir.

Dav: (Looking at the bartender) Two beers and some peanuts, if you don’t mind.

  Bartender: (Nods) Right away, sir.

Viktor Karpov: (Looking at Dav) My name’s Viktor Karpov, but I go by “Vik.”

I’m 34 years old and the gang leader of the Pugna Rera.

We’re not a big organization, no more than a hundred men.

I lost my wife a long time ago, due to lack of medical care—I couldn’t afford it…

(Lowering his gaze, clenching his fists) After her death, all I had left was my daughter, small and with the same physical conditions as her mother.

I swore to myself then—and still do—that I won’t let her meet the same fate.

So I decided to get money faster, stealing and fighting other gangs for power and a few scraps of cash.

She’s home sleeping right now, and I make sure she always gets her meds and care, even if they’re not the best.

  She’s all I’ve got.

I started this life for her, it’s true.

But then I found some good subordinates over time, and I started to not hate the life as much.

But my daughter hated me for it.

When she saw me with them in shady places…

Even as a child, she understood what criminals and pain meant—without me ever needing to explain.

  [Dav eating peanuts]

Viktor Karpov: (Drinking beer) It hurts, honestly...

I did all this just for her, and I get that she hates me and doesn’t want to see me.

But I had no other choice.

Since I was a kid, my only life was in the slums—desperately trying to survive without being killed.

When I met my wife, I decided to leave all that and live peacefully with her...

(Biting his lip, tears in his eyes) Then fate took her from me, I lost my job, and what else could I do?..

Dav: (Opening a peanut) Viktor, I’m sorry about your wife, and about raising your daughter alone while she’s sick.

(Looking him in the eyes) Let’s say you had the chance to change things—an honest job, suited for you, paid with clean money, and enough to afford your daughter’s treatments like any normal person—would you take it?

Viktor Karpov: (Looking down) Who would want a criminal like me?..

I’m not trying to convince anyone with my story.

Only my daughter matters to me.

  I live for her.

Dav: (Small smile) I’ve got a job for you.

But you’ll need to dissolve your gang—and I’ll give a job to anyone who chooses to follow you.

Viktor Karpov: (Light in his eyes) That’s not a problem.

They’d follow me to Mars if I asked.

  As for the gang—it’s fine.

Dav: (Drinking) Good. Your job will be head of security in charge of protecting my family.

  I hope that won’t be a problem.

  [Viktor Karpov stands and kneels]

Viktor Karpov: (Determined) It would be an honor, sir!

I swear on my life—no one will touch your family!

  Dav: (Chewing) Good.

We’ll spend tonight together and I’ll tell you about them—then we’ll go meet them later.

Viktor Karpov: (Small smile) Alright, sir!
