C1 Getting a Job

Vegis woke up in his small closet of a room with a jolt. The sounds of crashing and screams filled the air of the apartment complex he lived in. In half asleep panic, he ran out of the room and tripped out of the fire escape. When Vegis got up from the floor and headed toward the crowd of people in front of the building. He stood around until a hand tapped his shoulder. Turning around to see who it was, he got blinded by a flashlight.

"Ah, sorry about that," a familiar voice said. Josh was an acquaintance of his that he met at his first job a few years ago and eventually, they both realized they live in the same complex. "It's alright, so what do ya think happened?" Vegis spoke after rubbing his eyes for a bit. "I think one of the guys on the 3rd floor messed with one of the control panels." Josh said after snuffing out the light ball he was holding. "Do ya think they will be kicked out or not? This is the 3rd time this week." "Probably not"

After waiting outside the building for a while, the noises turned off and the building manager walked out with a scowl. "Okay" she shouted. "We got the panel fixed and removed the scream sound from the alarm system, so no more screams from the intercoms when the next fuck up happens." while Vegis and Josh nodded at this, so did the crowd since the screams were very much an annoyance.

As soon as the crowd quieted down a little, the manager spoke up. " While you guys are out here, I got an announcement from the landlord. Rents going up 3% due to renovations and expansions being planned for the incoming shipment of colonists coming." Groans could be heard all over the group of tenants. "Yeah, I know it's a pain in the ass but I can't do anything about this," She said. Just after the crowd started to walk back inside the apartment complex, the manager spotted Vegis and sent him a message to his cybernetic eye that said, "In 3 hours, meet me out in the back of the building cause we need to have a conversation". This caused Vegis to panic since he had just lost his job last week and was barely able to pay rent last time.

Vegis entered his room and sat down on the only chair in his room to calm down but soon started to stress over what the manager was going to talk about. "Shit", he thought to himself out loud, "she knows I can't pay this month and don't have any savings left from last time. Does she want me to move out before the end of the month, or does she have something to help me. UAHHHHHHHHHHH." After stewing in his thoughts of trying to figure out what she wanted for a while, he looked up and saw that 2 hours had passed. Surprised at this, Vegis jumped up and decided to get clean and changed before meeting the Manager. Hopping out of his cramped space refreshed, Vegis walked to the back of the apartment 10 minutes before the meeting time. Opening the back door of the building, he saw 2 people, the manager and a strange fella in a mark on their left shoulder. When they heard the door open, they turned to see Vegis and greeted him.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

"This is Vegis, and I think he would be a great candidate for the new opening you guys have." the manager said to the unknown person who then grabbed Vegis and looked him up and down. Turning to the building manager, Vegis spoke. "Who is this and what are we doing?" confusion showed all over his face. "This is an old friend of mine who needs more workers and I thought you need some work." The new fella finally spoke up after some time of scanning him up and down. "He will be viable for the position. Hello, you are Veegis, right". Vegis nodded and said, "close enough".

"This is a small position in the Planetary Government. You will be given a bi-monthly pay of 3020 Gribs per clone you can control." The apparent government recruiter said. "Sweet" Vegis shouted, but then scrunched his brows. "Wait, you said per clone?" "Yes per clone. To be specific, it is for every clone you have good control over. You see, we are currently understaffed in the more, menial jobs. Before you ask why not use the bots, these clones are being sent to areas that mess the fragile components of bots to be of use, even well shield ones struggle to exist." They said before pausing for Vegis to digest what was said before continuing with, " As for the second question you probably have of why not use normal human, it is because the clones are going to die a lot. The dangers in the area make it hard to staff with normal people and those powerful enough to stay in those areas typically don't like to do these tasks."

Vegis thought over this for a couple of minutes weighing in the danger that was stated but the great pay to contrast it. Cloning tech has come far from its original origins of just growing a body that is genetically identical from the donor body. It now allows for something best described as a mental link between the cloned and origin body. This however does with tones of risk that could break the person doing this. From unimaginable pain, swapping which is the origin body with the clone and killing the person, the mental strain being too much for them to handle and going feral, etc. Counter measures to these possibilities have been put in place, but the general population still are hesitant of using it. Its main use now is to have spare organs for people on hand and for extreme measures, transferring one's mind into the clone. This is a tricky process that delves into how to move a soul without breaking it or sending it to the afterlife.

When he was finished thinking, Vegis asked, “When do I start” to which the recruiter said, “after next week since we still need to grow the clones, but we can start testing out your capabilities tomorrow.”
