Chapter 0.5: Prologue Part II

  Chapter 0.5: Prologue Part II

  ____________________________________________________________________________

Hundreds of years ago, the world only consisted of animals, treading each wave of life with the Fog of Extinction. Some defended. Others indured extinction level events and came out on top. A few even evolved to warp the events. That is, until the humans came out of the Fog, starting a brutal, two-hundred-fifty-year-long war. Thousands died. More so on the animals’ side than the humans’, so the Global Animal Council deemed humans as machines and property, and deemed it illegal to say otherwise.

Every animal agreed to the law. But over the years, they also began to underestimate the humans, marking their inevitable mistake. But the forgetfulness didn’t come to the Tiger Tribe. Not yet.

That was when the story ended.

Cyra lifted her little head. And communicated through her body language, “Why didn’t the Council end the humans, Mom?”

“Because the world’s animals already act like those bastards,” Cyra’s mother, a tiger with black and blue fur, replied. “They see profit. Our ancestors saw profit. When people see profit, they forget that even benefits can strike back.”

On the day she awoke, Cyra quickly discovered that the tiger tribe doesn’t have human slaves like most tribes do. Instead, they’re more religious. They are either seeking for or seeking to create a deity of a legendary species called “Lycanthropes.” According to legends and religious speakings, Lycanthropes take the best of both worlds and combine them. A creature with the qualities of the base animal, combined with the pros of humans. Better grip and climbing. Intelligence. Other qualities her tiny brain doesn’t have the processing power to remember.

Cyra followed her mother outside to the watering hole to drink. Every time she goes out here, she remembers the tragedy that happened the day after her piercing blue eyes woke for the first time.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

A conflict between her father and a few guards from the Cheetah Tribe sparked so her father attempted to escape from the Cheetahs. Normally, that would work against Cheetahs, but one is like her. One has a System. Crutched by that System, he effortlessly ran across the water and scratched her father into fifths.

Cyra remembered her mother’s shock and her own tears upon coming across that black and yellow-striped tiger corpse that used to be her father. How two cheetahs flanked it. How they used her father as an example of what would happen in a year if they don’t offer an apology gift for what her father did; prostitution of the family’s daughter.

Before Cyra’s mind could spiral, her mother pressed her against her leg. “Your System is open again.”

Cyra turned her attention to it.

Cyra closed the screen only she and her mother could see. Her father had the ability to see it to, as he helped birth her, but he’s dead now. She had just closed the System window when a Cheetah her age stumbled across the watering hole.

“The h-h-humans are coming,” the Cheetah warned.

As much as Cyra hates the Cheetahs, she hates the humans more. She hates the Council more. As if on cue, an arrow fell towards the fallen Cheetah cub, but he dodged in a blur of tans, oranges, and browns.
